Hardshell welcomes Dr. Matthew Burkett to its Advisory Board. Burkett is an Assistant Professor in the University of Virginia's Department of Systems and Information Engineering and brings more than two decades of experience applying systems engineering, artificial intelligence, quantitative modeling, and data-driven decision-making to high-stakes problems across academia, financial markets, and complex litigation. He joins Dr. John Elder on the advisory board as the company scales its data-layer AI security platform across commercial and federal markets.

Dr. Matthew Burkett is an Assistant Professor in the University of Virginia's Department of Systems and Information Engineering, where he directs the Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) in Systems Engineering. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, financial engineering, stochastic modeling, and decision-making in complex and uncertain environments.
Matthew brings more than two decades of experience applying quantitative methods and advanced analytics to high-stakes problems. As a Senior Director at Ankura Consulting Group, he served as a quantitative economic expert on matters involving capital markets, algorithmic trading, energy markets, government pricing, and complex financial litigation. Before that, as Vice President of Research at LOC Investment Advisers, he developed more than twenty quantitative investment strategies managing approximately $750 million in assets and more than fifty models for portfolio construction and risk analysis. He also served as a Research Fellow at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, investigating high-frequency trading behavior associated with the 2010 "Flash Crash."
Matthew holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Systems and Information Engineering from the University of Virginia. His research and professional work share a common focus on using systems thinking, quantitative modeling, and emerging technologies to understand complex environments and improve decision-making under uncertainty. Hardshell's approach to dataset security grew out of co-founder Hunter Moore's doctoral work in the same department, and that shared foundation is one reason the fit is natural. His perspective will support Hardshell as it advances AI security and risk management for complex, high-consequence environments.
