Hardshell won the 2026 Virginia Cup on September 17 at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach, taking first place and the $20,000 top prize. Hosted by Innovate Hampton Roads, the Virginia Cup is the Commonwealth's official qualifier for the Startup World Cup, and the win sends Hardshell to the Startup World Cup Grand Finale in San Francisco on November 6 to compete for a $1 million investment prize.
Ten companies were selected as Virginia's top startups and pitched live, each with four minutes on stage followed by questions from the judges once all ten had presented. The $50,000 prize pool was split across the top three finishers and an Audience Choice award. The Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) and the City of Virginia Beach were among the event's partners.
Andrew Schoka, Hardshell's co-founder and CEO and a former Army cyber operations officer, delivered the four-minute pitch. Hardshell is the data-centric AI security platform that enables organizations to safely use their private data in the AI systems they build, buy, and deploy. The platform tests what an AI knowledge base can be made to leak, shows which documents retrieval actually returns and to whom, and hardens sensitive data before it reaches training, fine-tuning, or retrieval. The company works with mid-market firms and federal mission partners putting enterprise AI to work on sensitive data.
The result keeps the Cup in Charlottesville for a second straight year, following Luminoah's win in 2025. It also follows Hardshell's first-place finish at the VetsinTech Pitch Contest in August and comes ahead of TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, October 13-15 in San Francisco, where the company will exhibit as part of the Startup Battlefield 200. Hardshell is headquartered in Charlottesville.
